The semi-private Perry Golf and Country Club was built in 1954. The best thing about it is the greens, which are small to medium-sized, most with good slope and undulation. Some of the pin placements can be difficult, and the greens are surprisingly fast. [...] more »

Jefferson Country Club in Monticello, Florida opened in 1965. It's one of the better nine-hole courses in this part of north-central Florida, which has several small layouts. They can be a decent day of golf if you're not expecting a long, championship-caliber layout, or resort-style conditioning. [...] more »

Despite not being flavored by the lovely river, Rainbow Springs Golf and Country Club is still a beauty. It plays through the semi-rolling hills in this part of the state, 20 miles south of Ocala in the southwest part of Marion County. [...] more »

You won't find many settings more beautiful than where architect Robert Walker laid out the Regatta Bay Golf and Country Club, in Destin, Fla. First of all, it's in Destin, that strip of vacation land that lies between the rolling dunes of the Gulf of Mexico and the languid waters of Choctawatchee Bay. [...] more »

The Ocala Golf Club has been modernized nicely, to keep up with growing Ocala and Marion County. Like most municipal golf courses, it isn't long, around 6,300 yards from the back tees, but it's no pushover. It isn't always necessary to hit driver here, as the distance implies. In fact, the smart play is often with a long iron or fairway wood, since those doglegs are usually well guarded. [...] more »

The Meadows golf course at the Bay Point Marriott Resort in Panama City, Florida is an old-style country club course that's not terribly challenging if you can keep it in play. The terrain is dotted throughout by lakes and ponds, much of it lateral, though a few short water carries do exist. [...] more »

Kelly Plantation golf course, built just west of the Mid-Bay Bridge in Destin, on the site of an old turpentine plantation, is clearly among the best golf courses the Destin/Ft. Walton Beach has to offer, with its manicured conditioning, scenic surroundings and playable layout. Everything about it says first-class. [...] more »

Hombre Golf Club rewards accuracy over macho. The course is an annual host of the PGA Tour qualifying school, and a certain breed of long hitters doesn't like to make this trip. If you insist on unloading the elephant gun every hole, you probably won't like it either. [...] more »

The Wanamaker course at PGA Golf Club is a newly renovated Tom Fazio design that just might be the toughest golf course in Florida. The bunkers and greens are the usual Fazio monsters, but it's the tilted fairways that will most likely doom your scorecard. [...] more »

A Jacksonville landmark since 1925, Hyde Park Golf Club has a lot of that which causes Donald Ross' legions of devotees to revisit his courses again and again: the elevated, crowned greens; the artfully and strategically placed bunkers; the focus on strategy over brute strength. [...] more »

The Killearn Country Club and Inn is probably the best-known golf club in Tallahassee, Fla., certainly to those old enough to remember the many tournaments the facility has hosted: 21 Tallahassee Opens and four LPGA tournaments. [...] more »

Eagle Creek Golf Club is an odd combination of American and British golf architecture that turned out extremely well. The co-designers, Floridian Ron Garl and Englishman Howard Swan, set out to mix course elements from both sides of the Atlantic. [...] more »

Circa-'60s Seminole Golf Course underwent a dramatic renovation two years ago that transformed the track. The new greens are the highlight of the course - elevated, multi-tiered, slanted, sloped and undulating. They're relatively large, and no two are alike. [...] more »

Radically altered by Jack Nicklaus' team, the former Lagoons Legend at Bay Point Resort is a tamer but still a very imaginative layout loaded with flair. This is an excellent mix of holes, with nary a dud, and a must-play in the Panama City Beach, Fla. area. [...] more »

With its red-sand bunkers, rolling hills and beautiful old oaks, Tallahassee's SouthWood Golf Club is so pretty you want to give it a smack on the lips. But hold that pucker, sailor: SouthWood has some bite. [...] more »

The Green Swamp is the dominant feature of Highlands Reserve Golf Course, even though it never actually comes into play. Highlands Reserve is tilted toward the swamp, and it draws putts like magnets. As one course regular put it, "There's three famous words here: 'stop' and 'please stop.'" [...] more »

Diamondback Golf Club in Haines City, Fla. is a parkland course, with tight, tree-lined fairways with thick rough on both sides. Put away your driver: This is a course that must be managed carefully or you score will balloon. [...] more »

There's nothing like a brand new golf course, especially when you know it's going to grow up to be a star. The Golf Club at Bridgewater is younger than new: It hasn't even been born yet. Actually, that isn't technically true. The course itself is raring to go; it just needs someone to play it. [...] more »

Frenchman's Creek's North golf course is a Jim Fazio renovation that's generally just for the enjoyment of the millionaire residents in this Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. luxury community. The conditions and quality of service really let you know that you're at an elite club. [...] more »

The Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables is a deceptively difficult track, relatively short but with Donald Ross' characteristically small greens. They don't have the radical drop-offs many of the master's courses do but you can find yourself in trouble if you hit to the wrong area, as Ross intended. [...] more »

Abacoa Golf Club in Jupiter, Fla. has to be the most Spring-Training-centric golf course in the world. This 7,200-yard Joe Lee design shares sports-complex space with the St. Louis Cardinals' and Florida Marlins' spring stadium and practice fields. [...] more »

Southern Dunes Golf & Country Club could easily be called Southern Bunkers. There are 182 of them, in a variety of shapes and sizes, in keeping with designer Steve Smyers' signature strategic concept. They're yawning, gaping, maddening and always in play. [...] more »

Cleveland Heights Golf Course is a little oasis in the middle of growing, bustling Lakeland, Fla. with lakes, ponds and the sort of critters you don't normally associate with downtown. After years of watching the PGA big boys play the Blue Monster on TV, you'll hit the tee thinking those big-boy thoughts, ready to swing like there's no tomorrow. Don't. Taming the pride of Miami golf is more about playing smart than playing long. [...] more »

Built on beautiful, rolling terrain on the outskirts of Gainesville, Fla., Meadowbrook Golf Club has a well-regarded architect (Steve Smyers), a challenging up-and-down layout, good hole variety and abundant wildlife around its natural ponds, streams and valleys. But the course is in dire need of some tender loving care. [...] more »

Quail Heights Country Club is an unimposing, low-key facility in Central Florida that could use some upgrades. Still, most of the course is in good shape, and it can be a fun, challenging workout - Seve Ballesteros couldn't break 70 when he played a tournament here in 1986.

Ironwood Golf Course, the track some locals called "Ironweed" when the city of Gainesville bought it in 1992, has gotten continuous improvements since then. It's what a muni should be - a cheap course with an interesting layout that caters to anyone who wants to play the game without all the expensive bells and whistles. [...] more »

You have to be a man, or at least a helluva lady, to play the two courses here at LPGA International, the home of the Ladies Professional Golf Association. The Legends course is not overly long at 6,984 yards from the back tees, but carries a difficult slope rating of 142. Even from the blues, it's 136 and from the whites 132. The reason: trouble. "This is a golf course that can gobble up golf balls," said resident Pro Joe Giomariso. [...] more »
